ABOUT

About coffeeshop Mississippi Maastricht

The Mississippi Coffeeshop, situated on a boat on the River Meuse in Maastricht, boasts a rich and unique history. Its journey began in 1988 with Huub, a barge skipper transporting cargo along the river. When his boat’s engine broke down, Huub found himself in a financial bind, with no assistance from the bank. At the time, hashish was commonly sold from boats on the Meuse, and Huub often faced inquiries from passengers. Inspired, he decided to start selling hashish from his boat, which quickly turned into a thriving business. Together with his brother-in-law Jean, Huub transformed the vessel into a floating coffeeshop, keeping its legacy alive.

Known locally as “the boat,” the Mississippi has been a mainstay in Maastricht for generations, solidifying its place as a coffeeshop with a rich barge history. This family-run establishment, now helmed by the third generation, is a rarity and adds to its charm and uniqueness.

In October, due to low water levels, the original Mississippi boat partially sank, leading to a temporary closure. However, in a remarkable turnaround, the team managed to bring in a new temporary boat by November, just in time for the festivities. As of December 1st, the new Mississippi boat is back in action, ready to welcome guests daily from 8:00 AM to 2:00 AM, every day of the year.

Whether you’re seeking a place to relax, enjoy a delicious meal, or immerse yourself in its vibrant history, we’ve got you!

Come and visit us and and enjoy the “Mississippi Experience”.
